Salzbourg, Août 2018. Un grand-père narre à ses (trois) enfants un conte (de noël) avant de les coucher. Le vers est dans le fruit, la flûte dans les songes, l’enfance dans Mozart. Jolie idée, si elle ne devait grever le déroulement d’une représentation plutôt spectaculaire d’un récitant qui sera peut-être supporté par un public germanophone mais invitera sans coup férir le spectateur du DVD à zapper. Tout de même, quels désaveux, là où Ponnelle et Levine avaient restitué la « Zauberflöte » dans tous ses dialogues, rendu à Mozart le théâtre que Schikaneder lui avait offert, cette peine à jouir de récitant qui vient plomber. On se rembourserait bien avec la seule musique, mais l’orchestre sans apprêts, droit comme un i, voulu et assumé par Constantinos Carydis qui réussit ce tour de force inédit – rendre les Wiener Philharmoniker méconnaissables – est déjà un empêchement. Et les chanteurs pris dans ce piège se débattent comme ils peuvent : Tamino sans grâce selon Mauro Peter, Reine sans éclat de Shagimuratova, Papageno plat de Plachetka. Alors il faut attendre Christiane Karg qui sait que Seefried fut Pamina et Matthias Goerne, Sarastro digne d’Hans Hotter, pour se consoler un peu de ce spectaculaire naufrage heureusement documenté pour les générations futures… (Discophilia - Artalinna.com) (Jean-Charles Hoffelé)

W.A. Mozart’s timeless masterpiece at the Salzburg Festival is always an event! Especially when Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) receives such a “spectacular and virtuosic staging” (Le Figaro) by director Lydia Steier. Steier introduces the role of the grandfather, a narrator reading the opera like a fairy tale to his three grandchildren, performed by the famous actor Klaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa, James Bond). This ‘trick’ in combination with the gigantic moveable sets by stage designer Katharina Schlipf, allows new views on Mozart’s magical opera, with its different worlds. Thanks to conductor Constantinos Carydis, who “seems to breath with the music” (Tagesspiegel), there is a new Mozart to be heard too: Carydis draws “precise phrasing and plenty of crisp articulation” (Financial Times) from “the musicians of the great Vienna Philharmonic” (New York Times).
