C’était le rêve de Placido Domingo : diriger "Don Giovanni". Ce fut chose faite pour les 230 ans de la création de l’ouvrage à Prague, Domingo réinvestissant l’œuvre de sa battue vive (et un poil historiquement informé, du moins les accents de l’ouverture le laissent accroire) dans le théâtre même où Mozart se produisit, y entrainant une troupe de jeunes chanteurs partagées entre des lauréats de son Concours Operalia et de frais gosiers tchèques. Spectacle classique datant de la fin des années soixante –signé Josef Svoboda – à peine relu par le vétéran Jiri Nekrasil. Cela se regarde sans aucune surprise mais surtout sans déplaisir d’autant que les costumes de Theodor Pisek n’ont guère vieilli. Mais l’équipe de chant reste disparate et parfois en deçà des standards vocaux qu’exige le chef d’œuvre de Mozart (Masetto et Le Commandeursont gris trottoir). Dimitry Korchak, qui fait figure de star parmi tant de jeunesse, en méforme, éreinte son Don Ottavio alors que l’Elvira de Katerina Knezikova triomphe, ardente et stylée, comme surprend la Donna Anna recueilli, intense, d’Irina Lungu. Hélas Julia Novilova noie sa Zerlina d’un chant sans grâce. Heureusement, le Don impérieux de Simone Alberghini, s’équilibre parfaitement avec un Leporello remarquable ; Adrian Sampetrean revisite la dimension buffo du personnage, à l’écouter le souvenir de Fernando Corena s’invite plus d’une fois. The world-famous singer, conductor and the holder of 14 Grammy Awards Plácido Domingo came up, as conductor and artistic director, with a unique Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre Prague, where the opera had its premiere 230 years ago. The production boasts an original classic scene, traditional costumes, designed by Theodor Pištek, the Oscar winner “Best costume design” for the Amadeus movie and authentic stage direction matching the performance features from 1787. The production is conceived as a replica of the legendary staging by the National Theatre Opera from 1969. The opera shines under the direction of Jirí Nekvasil, which is further enhanced by stars of the Czech opera scene, handpicked by Maestro Domingo himself. Also adding vitality to the production are four winners of the renowned, international vocal competition, Operalia, which Domingo himself founded in 1993: Irina Lungu, Dmitry Korchak, Julia Novikova, and Simone Alberghini. “The palpable sense of history, enthusiasm of the cast and excitement of the star conductor all contributed to an atmosphere that made the performance seem larger than life.”
