Dans les salons du XIXe siècle, flûte et guitare ont souvent fait bon ménage avec notamment les compositions de Giuliani, Carulli et Gragnani. L’Arius Duo formé en 2013 nous présente ici les oeuvres complètes de Luigi Legnani, initialement ténor puis guitariste, surnommé à l’époque le Paganini de la guitare, c’est tout dire. Auteur de nombreuses pièces qu’il joua dans toute l’Europe, il devient luthier à partir de 1850, créant et construisant des violons et de très bonnes guitares. Deux œuvres majeures se détachent dans cet enregistrement de qualité, le Duetto Concertante op. 23 et le Gran Duetto op. 87 où le style particulier de Legnani s’impose mêlant romantisme et une certaine emprise de l’opéra italien, réminiscence de ses années de ténor à la Scala de Milan. Dans la première citée, l’influence de Rossini est perceptible alors que le Gran Duetto, profond et intériorisé, est plus virtuose, chaque instrument étant exploité au maximum (Maestoso et Polacca). Deux autres pièces inspirées d’Ernani de Verdi complètent le récital. Le duo italien réussit intelligemment à ne pas surexposer la flûte, défaut récurrent dans les oppositions flûte-guitare. Il en résulte un remarquable équilibre et une interprétation de haute tenue des deux instrumentistes, aidée d’une excellente prise de son. (Philippe Zanoly)

Renowned in his lifetime throughout Europe as a performer and instrument maker, virtuoso guitarist and opera singer Luigi Legnani’s compositions are tragically under-represented in recordings and concert programmes. This is despite his body of over 250 works published by many of the major publishing houses of the time. Fresh, new ensemble AriusDuo have therefore presented themselves as the newest champions of his work, with a recording of his entire extant works for flute and guitar. Well established in their native Italy, and passionate exponents of unfamiliar repertoire both old and new for the pairing, the duo seek to find new enthusiasts for this much over-looked composer. Thoroughly operatic in nature, and with equal amounts of showmanship from both instruments, the Duetto Concertante Op.23 and Gran Duetto Op.87 are two resplendent works, offering all the energy and expression of the opera seria and opera buffa so central to 19th-century Italian music. Cavatina d’Ernani and Cavatina d’Elvira, on the other hand, are explicit arrangements of songs from Verdi’s Ernani, an opera portraying the amorous exploits of an outlawed nobleman. The pieces realise the sumptuousness and elegance of the original songs’ passionate confessions of love, whilst exploiting the technical brilliance of each performer.
