 Drôles de dames ! Pour leur début, elles nous stupéfient par leur maîtrise, à la fois technique et expressive. En plus, révélant sûrement à pas mal de mélomanes (c'est aussi manière de "briser le silence") des œuvres d'autant plus étonnamment belles que fleurissant au bord de l'abîme barbare. On sait que les nazis firent de Terezin (ou Theresienstadt), de la réalité d'un camp de concentration, de transit ou ghetto, l'apparence (même pour la Croix-Rouge!) d'une quasi villégiature pour création de spectacles. Y moururent rien que sur place plus de 30 000 juifs tchèques, allemands ou autrichiens, prioritairement artistes et personnalités. Ainsi Schulhoff, juif, homosexuel et communiste particulièrement traqué, fut rattrapé juste avant sa fuite en URSS et mourut en concentration. Ses cinq pièces, dédiées à Darius Milhaud, remontent toutefois à 1923, hommage véhément et sardonique (en sarcasme prémonitoire?) aux figures variées de la danse européenne, entre baroque et seconde école de Vienne. De la captivité de Viktor Ullmann, élève de Schönberg et Zemlinsky, gazé à Auschwitz, les manuscrits ont été bien conservés, dont ce court quatuor terminé en 1943, d'un classicisme viennois nostalgique, à l'émouvant mouvement lent. Korngold, lui, un enfant prodige, échappa à la bête immonde en se réfugiant aux Etats-Unis dès 1936. Cet autre fin quatuor, typique de sa dernière période, est davantage élégant et fluide qu'il n'est parfois chromatique ou dissonant. Mais bref, quel superbe disque, que clôt une courte prière de l'israélien Zehavi. This is the fascinating music of an entire generation of composers that is only slowly finding the way back into the concert hall, music that should be heard. The four musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra display a distinctive sense of timing, precision, and partnership that informs their virtuosic quartet playing. Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Viktor Ullmann, and Erwin Schulhoff lived independent lives and offer, characteristically, three autonomous soundscapes. Yet they are inextricably connected by the persecutions of the Nazi Regime and the disruption of the Second World War: none of the composers could freely develop his talent, and all were forgotten after their deaths. During a European tour of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2016, the Clarion Quartet gave a concert in the historical Musiksaal of the concentration camp Terezín. This highly emotional experience gave birth to “Breaking the Silence”.
