Molter, très tôt influencé par Telemann, fit la plus grande partie de sa carrière comme violoniste, maître de chapelle et compositeur à la cour de Durlach et de Karlsruhe. Il partit à deux reprises en Italie, et étudia notamment à Rome et à Venise. Le présent Cd illustre bien les principales facettes de son œuvre : à côté de la symphonie à la fois solennelle et brillante, qui reste encore enfermée dans les rites et les contraintes d'une musique d'apparat, les œuvres vocales (2 arias et une « cantate » qui consiste en fait en la réunion de deux arias da capo séparées par un récitatif) sont pleinement représentatives d'un style galant qui fait la part belle à une virtuosité qu'on peut parfois trouver un peu convenue : si deux des airs chantés ici comparent les amours des oiseaux aux amours des humains et opposent le bonheur des premiers, même quand ils se lamentent (parce que leur plainte trouve toujours un écho dans la nature) à l'abandon dans lequel se retrouve l'homme ou la femme, la légéreté, la faconde, la verve ne laissent pratiquement aucune place au soupir, à la déploration. La Sonata grossa (terme spécifiquement forgé par Molter et qui désigne en fait une suite orchestrale) tient le milieu et fait en quelque sorte la synthèse entre festivité démonstrative et alacrité galante. C'est bien interprété, plaisant, mais pas inoubiable. (Bertrand Abraham)

From time immemorial Thuringia has been a highly musical region. Along with the greats who resided there at least for a time, like Schütz, Telemann, Bach and his sons, and Liszt, a closer examination reveals other Thuringian composers who indisputably contributed to the course of music history. So too Johann Melchior Molter. This composer from Tiefenort was active in Eisenach and Karlsruhe and during his lifetime was regarded as one of the most productive and significant composers as well as a trailblazer participating in the transition from the Baroque to the classical era. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his death Theater&Philharmonie Thüringen has launched an editorial project in cooperation with the Institute of Musicology in Weimar-Jena. Students from the college edited works by Molter that had ceased to be performed after his death, so that they then could be heard again for the first time in 250 years in concerts in Altenburg and Gera by the Reuß Chamber Orchestra led by Werner Ehrhardt. They are now celebrating their recording premiere on cpo.
