Bien qu’il ait vécu assez longtemps, Johann Evangelist Brandl, qui fut kapellmeister à Stuttgart puis Karlsruhe et compositeur relativement prolifique, n’a guère laissé de trace dans l’histoire de la musique. Ses deux symphonies écrites au tournant du 19° siècle (la seconde fut publiée en 1803) relèvent d’un style très classique, comparable à celui des premières de Schubert, génie et charme mélodiques en moins. Contemporaines de celles de Beethoven, elles permettent juste de mesurer une nouvelle fois la distance incommensurable qui sépare le simple talent du génie. Néanmoins, interprétées avec enthousiasme et précision par l’orchestre de Rhénanie Palatinat sous la baguette jeune et dynamique de Kevin Griffiths, elles enrichissent utilement notre connaissance du premier romantisme allemand. On est reconnaissant à CPO de nous donner à entendre tous ces petits maîtres qui faisaient carrière à la même époque que Beethoven et Schubert mais restaient attachés à un style hérité de Haydn et Mozart sans originalité ni personnalité marquante. A tout prendre, c’est plus intéressant qu’une n-ième Héroïque gravée de façon routinière… (Richard Wander)

His very first compositions received positive reviews, and his later works even enjoyed international recognition. His contemporaries regarded him as »one of the most significant and distinguished composers of our time.« Who was this mystery man? The Beethoven contemporary Johann Evangelist Brandl! Born in 1760 in Markt Rohr, near Regensburg, Brandl entered the Roman Catholic Seminary in Munich in 1770 and began composing in an environment including local music greats like Johann Lukas Schubaur and Johann Evangelist Wallishauser. In 1789 he successfully applied for a post as the music director at the Bruchsal court of Archbishop August von Limburg-Stirum, and in 1808 he became the music director of the Grand Duke of Baden’s court orchestra in Karlsruhe. Brandl’s musical language, above all toward the end of his oeuvre, moves beyond the style of classicism toward sharpened chromaticism and already displays characteristics of early romanticism. The development of Brandl’s compositional style from the sonata form still largely adhering to the classical formal scheme to a fascinating break with familiar listening habits is especially striking when his earlier Symphony No. 12 and his Symphony No. 25, his last such work, are compared. While No. 12 continues to sparkle very much in the spirit of the eighteenth century with its clear and elegant tonal idiom in the style of the late Joseph Haydn, in No. 25 Brandl anticipates virtuosic elements of the romantic era and sometimes its amazing harmonic modulations.
