Das Marienleben est un cycle de poèmes de Rainer Maria Rilke que Paul Hindemith mis en musique en deux temps, création en 1923 à l'âge de 27 ans (l'époque du blasphématoire Sancta Suzanna et de la Kammermusik n°1) puis une version finalisée en 1948. Entretemps l'enfant terrible s'est assagi et même radouci, puisant chez Rilke des sentiments inédits : empathie et compassion. Cycle de lieder pour piano et soprano qui nous brosse en quinze tableaux l'histoire de la Vierge Marie, mère de Jésus. Le cycle suit un plan tonal assez fidèle traversé de quelques fragments dissonants. L'écriture d'Hindemith, limpide et serrée, fait entrelacer voix et piano dans un discours jamais redondant, s'accordant bien avec la narration d'une austérité didactique, à la fois familière et grave du poète. La voix de Marie, ange ou oiseau, s'envole et se pose sur les ramifications labyrinthiques du piano qui a la tâche difficile de poser le décor. Matière ardue et poreuse, cimentée par une polyphonie à la fois d'une liberté inouïe et très strictement maitrisée. Ce langage néo-baroque qui emploie fugue ostinato et passacaille fait respirer la pâte musicale, lui apportant toujours goût et saveur. Maya Boog possède une voix ronde et épanouie, elle a l'amplitude nécessaire pour convaincre et l'articulation qu'il faut pour nous dépeindre chaque événement. Accompagnateur réactif, le pianiste Michael Lakner effectue un parcours sans faute. Il épouse sa partenaire grâce à des qualités semblables : projection, énonciation, limpidité. Paul Hindemith composed what certainly qualifies as his best-known song cycle in 1924 but then thoroughly revised it twenty-four years later. The second version of 1948 is now being presented on cpo, and of the two it is surely the one that is easier to sing, more appealing, and on the whole of greater maturity. The cycle consists of songs based on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. It depicts moments in the life of the Virgin Mary, and the song depicting the birth of Christ occupies the center of the cycle in its simplicity and concentration. Glenn Gould regarded Hindemith’s Marian cycle as nothing less than the most magnificent song cycle ever written, and it is now fittingly and outstandingly interpreted by the soprano Maya Boog and the pianist Michael Lakner, who is also the director of the Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl. The production of the song cycle likewise occurred in conjunction with last year’s Lehár Festival, where this sacred counterpoint to the operetta program created a sensation acclaimed by the public and the press : "Lakner, also an excellent pianist, accompanied the Swiss singer Maya Boog’s clear rendering of the text and elegant phrasing in the performance of Paul Hindemith’s Marienleben in the city’s parish church: a soulful rendering of the second version of the work was transmitted there".
