Création majeure du maître de ballet français Jean Dauberval, La Fille mal gardée fût dansé pour la première fois en 1789 au Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. Chorégraphié par Frederick Ashton en 1960, c’est une œuvre lyrique techniquement très exigeante. Grand classique du Royal Ballet, le succès auprès du public britannique est immédiat. Cette nouvelle captation live, enregistrée en début d’année au Royal Opera House de Londres ne déroge pas à la règle et est une grande réussite pour la compagnie anglaise. Natalia Osipova et Steven McRae y sont excellents dans les rôles titres, développant sur scène une remarquable alchimie. Osipova y campe une Lise joyeuse et mutine à la gestuelle précise, tandis que McRae incarne un Colas très ludique, qu’on aime immédiatement, avec d’étonnantes qualités physiques. Philip Mosley en Veuve Simone rejoint ce beau duo, et apporte une touche de music-hall à la célèbre danse du sabot de l’Acte I.

A classic of The Royal Ballet, La Fille mal gardée was an immediate hit with the British public. Choreographed by Frederick Ashton in 1960, it is a highly lyrical and technically demanding take on the simple tale of ‘love revailing’ which underpins this charming story. It was created by French ballet master Jean Dauberval and was first danced in 1789. This 2015 revival is a ‘company triumph’ (Independent), with principals Natalia Osipova and Steven McRae creating terrific onstage chemistry and delivering outstanding solo performances – Osipova as a ‘perky and gamine Lise’ with ‘pin-drop precise’ phrasing (Guardian), and McRae an instantly likeable, playful Colas whose physical articulation is ‘particularly Ashtonian’ in quality (Daily Telegraph). They are joined by Philip Mosley as Widow Simone, who brings ‘music-hall gusto’ (Independent) to the famous clog dance of Act I.
