Celui qui, suisse, compositeur, chef d’orchestre et hautboïste parmi les plus renommés, aujourd’hui encore fait sienne cette interdiction, édictée par Sándor Veress, son premier professeur de composition, d’écrire une seule note qui ne soit pas défendable sur le papier, nous fait toucher du doigt, avec "Psalm", les limites sur lesquelles « travaille toute bonne musique ». Dans cette composition de 1971, Holliger assimile, façonne et déconstruit à la fois le texte d’un poète à l’intense inventivité lexicale et grammaticale, gommant les mots au profit des expirations, souffles ou gémissements étouffés, renforçant de sa propre incarnation des horreurs de la Shoah celle de Paul Celan. Un autre exemple est celui de Choral Utopia, œuvre plus tardive qui donne son nom à l’album, où le compositeur divise le chœur en trois groupes de douze voix, chacun « accordé » d’une façon différente : les trois chantent, l’un tel qu’écrit, l’autre un tiers de ton au-dessus, le troisième un tiers de ton en-dessous, un texte agencé pour que les voyelles coïncident. Le résultat en est bluffant, déroulant les différents sons en une couche sonore dense et sobre à la fois. (Bernard Vincken)

“I need a musical discourse,” Holliger once said. This is a good description of his characteristic way of composing. Unlike Boulez, he does not base his works on charts and tables, but neither does he employ carpets of sound in the manner of Ligeti or the Spectralists. Particularly in his vocal works, Holliger allows himself to follow the associations suggested by certain words, and these associations in turn generate still other connections. “Shir Shavur” [The Broken Song] is the title of a cycle for choir that Holliger wrote based on 12 of David Rokeah’s poems. The idea of discourse can be seen in the fact that Holliger set both the Hebrew and the German versions of the text. This principle is also evident in the different ways the choral forces are handled. There are antiphonal or double choir settings, but also responsorial settings for solo and choir. In “Utopie Chorklang” [Choral Sound Utopia], he divided the choir into three groups of twelve voices each. These three groups are “tuned” in different ways, like registers of an organ. The second group sings its pitches, but the first group sings a third of a tone higher than written and the third group a third of a tone lower.
