In private concerts held in the salons of well-to-do families or public concerts taking place in newly sprouted concert halls, coffee houses and taverns, performances of sonatas and instrumental concertos were widespread, as were opera arias; these arias were often interpreted by the same musicians who were all the rage in the theaters. It is from the standpoint of a hypothetical ensemble comprised of virtuoso professionals of the day that the Ensemble Estro Cromatico has chosen to present Händel’s famous sonatas for recorder – a context that highlights and integrates characteristics of a practice centered around the improvisation, transcription and rewriting of a piece into various musical forms. The sonatas for recorder and basso continuo demonstrate the mastery with which Händel applied these compositional practices. Many of their melodic ideas, even entire movements, can also be found in his operas, oratorios and concertos.
