 Pour passer du statut de simple organiste dans une ville provinciale allemande à celui de compositeur d’opéra financé par le Roi dans la capitale financière européenne d’alors, il fallait qu’Haendel s’installe durablement en Italie pour y apprendre la langue et se familiariser avec l’art des mélodies et du chant. D’où le long séjour (1706-10) principalement à Rome où il se fit rapidement connaître et financer. Au cours de cette période, il composa la plupart de ses cantates dont les quatre enregistrées ici. Quatre opus à caractère profane ayant pour thème central la femme abandonnée, victime d’un amour impossible dont la très célèbre « Armida abbandonata » qui ouvre le récital. On est frappé d’emblée par la grande dynamique et l’énergie de ces interprétations. Carolyn Sampson y brille aussi bien dans les courts récitatifs que dans la vertigineuse série d’aria da capo destinés à mettre en valeur virtuosité et précision. Sous la conduite éclairée de Robert King, tout est parfaitement en place dans un délicat souci d’équilibre constant entre la soliste et l’orchestre de chambre. Un ensemble léger et virtuose qui accompagne et souligne parfaitement la splendide prestation de la cantatrice. Résultat : un très beau disque complété d’un magnifique livret. During his stay in Italy from 1706-10 the young Handel’s eyes and ears were opened wide. Hearing Italian music played by Italian musicians in Italian palazzos, churches and theatres musthave been jaw-dropping. Nowhere are those influences more vividly demonstrated than in his early Italian cantatas. In Armida abbandonata the heroine tries, and fails, to abandon the love that has abandoned her. Storms, passion, monsters, yearning, heartache, anguish and finally resignation are all portrayed in this strongest of cantatas. Even more powerful emotions are conjured up in Agrippina condotta a morire. The mother of the crazed emperor Nero is ruthless, ambitious, scheming, domineering, violent and beautiful. Realising that she has been betrayed by her own son, her emotions swing through disbelief, injustice, fury, resentment, grief, betrayal, resilience, pride, self-pity, humiliation, thwarted vengeance and finally come to resignation. Handel pushes all the boundaries, showing techniques that were to be incorporated into his works for decades to come in music of astonishing originality. Carolyn Sampson powerfully captures the drama in full-blooded, committed performances.
