 Henryk Górecki aura mis le temps à livrer ce troisième Quatuor à cordes au Kronos Quartet, qui l’avait commandé dès 1992. Pourquoi ? Le compositeur lui-même indique l’avoir retenu pendant dix ans, sans bien en savoir la raison, avant d’accepter enfin de le dévoiler, en 2005. Pour ce troisième quatuor, affranchi des règles rigides du genre par des années d’expérience et de maturité, Górecki s’est inspiré d’un poème de Velimir Khlebnikov pour mettre en notes, avec cette combinaison de dissonance acérée et de mélancolie invasive qui le caractérise, son désarroi face à la mort tragique, injuste et brutale - de proches ou d’inconnus (cette jeune femme, enceinte, exécutée par suite d’une accusation de collaboration pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale). Avec son interprétation, plus moelleuse que celle du Kronos Quartet, le Quatuor Dafô conforte l’atmosphère nostalgique, tendre et obscure à la fois, qui, par ses tempi lents, ses vastes couches sonores et planes, évoque immanquablement la Troisième Symphonie (Symphonie des Chants Plaintifs, 1976), œuvre la plus renommée d’un compositeur qui, nonobstant l’économie de moyens, sait toucher en profondeur. (Bernard Vincken) The Quartet No. 3 “...Songs are Sung,” Op. 67 by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki belongs to the late works of the composer, and for a long time it was considered to be his last opused work. It was created in the ‘90s on commission of the Kronos ensemble. The artist would redo it several times before he eventually decided to “release it to the world.” The reference to a song in the title is not accidental – the cantabile category, in combination with sometimes dramatic, sometimes doleful and melancholic narration additionally contributes to the Quartet becoming a sui generis chamber echo of the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs No. 3. The perception of the piece is dominated with Górecki’s style, recognisable by almost every music lover, deeply emotional, introvert, frugal and at the same time extremely moving. The Dafô Quartet, the first female string quartet in Poland, have been fascinated with contemporary music performance from the beginning of their activity; they belong to the most outstanding performers of Polish chamber music.
