 L'espagnol Fernando Sor choisit pour instrument la guitare à une époque où, dédaignée du public classieux des concerts, elle exhalait encore le parfum louche et un peu dangereux du bas peuple. Protégé de la duchesse d'Albe, on aurait pu le traiter en d'autres temps de collabo car il fit sienne la cause de l'envahisseur napoléonien. Il dut pour cela quitter définitivement son pays et acquit une grande réputation à Paris, y compris en publiant une méthode pour guitare, que l'on prisait infiniment plus en France. Il fit carrière dans toute l'Europe, depuis Londres et jusqu'à Moscou où il vécut un certain temps. Du lied à l'opéra, en passant à la fin par une messe pour sa fille défunte, il ne composa pas que pour la guitare, mais pour elle enfila études, variations, menuets, valses et autres fantaisies, le tout catalogué plus tard par son élève Coste... au prénom de Napoléon, décidément ! Compositions musicalement exigeantes, installant l'instrument dans un vrai classicisme (voire préromantisme) après la guitare baroque. Musique de salon pour certains, mais d'une obstination sincère, trahissant un grand amour pour le bel canto, modulant savamment ses mélodies dans un environnement harmonique subtil, équilibré, parfois ravissant et souvent très fin. Ce que rend parfaitement ici cet interprète italien, né en 1958, et qui eut naguère l'occasion de se perfectionner avec personne de moins que Julian Bream et Andrès Segovia. (Gilles-Daniel Percet) When he delivered his Deuxième Grande Sonate op. 25 to the publishers, Fernando Sor was a mature musician aged almost fifty, with an outstanding musical career behind him that had brought him fame in the main European capitals. At the end of the 1820s, the stylistic canons of music had, already for some time, begun to change, giving way to new forms of artistic expression. The most important and prestigious models of Viennese classicism that had always been a point of reference for Sor had become absorbed into the glorious - and ever more distant - past of the Enlightenment: Mozart had been dead for thirtysix years, Haydn for almost twenty. Not only this: his travels in Europe had allowed him to become acquainted with the most fashionable musicians of the time and, with them, the new musical trends that were sweeping through the Old Continent like a wave; it was inevitable, then, that the Catalan musician should come under the sway of the nascent Romantic movement. Suffice it to think that in Russia he played in a concert with John Field, the creative father of the Nocturne, that is to say the Romantic form par excellence. But that was not all. The most influential name, the true and unanimously acclaimed star of the 1810s and ’20s, was Beethoven, who was then in the period of transition between his second and third style, in other words the most intensely romantic and formally complex phase of his career. And it was impossible for an attentive composer like Sor, who had heard his works in Paris and London, not to be struck by the work of the genius from Bonn.
