Le Hongrois Emmerich Kálmán, né Koppstein, élève de Bartók et Kodály, demeure en France associé à l'une de ses plus grandes gloires, "Princesse Csardas" (1915). Longue est pourtant la liste de ses opérettes au chic mélodique irrésistible, presque toutes créées dans la Vienne de Strauss et Lehár où elles se jouent encore : Comtesse Maritza, La princesse de cirque, Impératrice Joséphine... Comme tant de Juifs, l'artiste fuit en 1938 et s'installe à Paris, avant de partir durant la guerre aux États-Unis, y rencontrant Oscar Straus, Korngold, Schoenberg ; puis revient à Paris, où il s'éteint en 1953. Le vétéran Richard Bonynge a des états de service à faire valoir dans ce répertoire particulier, et pas seulement Chauve-souris ou Veuve joyeuse : il a relancé Kálmán en enregistrant dans la collection Entartete Musik - Decca sa Duchesse de Chicago (encore un titre nobiliaire !). Naguère gravée en anglais par Newport Classics, cette très parisienne Bayadère – l'action se déroule au Théâtre du Châtelet – voit le chef australien en pleine forme galvaniser une équipe homogène, majoritairement allemande, au sein de laquelle on retrouve avec plaisir Rainer Trost et Stephan Genz. À noter, l'apparition parlée d'Yvonne Kálmán... fille cadette du compositeur. (Jacques Duffourg-Müller)

The Bayadere celebrated its premiere in Vienna on 23 December 1921. A few months later, on 18 February 1922, the Metropoltheater in Berlin staged this operetta by Emmerich Kálmán. His music brings together Hungarian folk melodies and the Viennese waltz, displays operatic and melodramatic elements, and illustrates the American dance rhythms of its times. In addition, it offers exotic tone colors like those of the tárogató and specific rhythms designed to satisfy the longing for the faraway, foreign India. These ingredients came with the guarantee of musical success. This work numbers among the genuine highlights in the Hungarian composer Kálmán’s operetta oeuvre. In 2014 the WDR presented a concert performance of The Bayadere and then went on to produce this work in the studio. We are happy and proud now to be able to release this benchmark production on cpo.
