 "Sea birds are asleep, The world forgets to weep". Roden Noel savait-il qu’il offrait à Edward Elgar avec son poème "Sea Slumber Song" l’amorce d’un des plus géniaux cycles de mélodies avec orchestre jamais composé ? Janet Baker règne sur ces cinq mélodies, seule et parfaite, même si Yvonne Minton l’a approchée de près et si bientôt Aafje Heynis viendra lui disputer sa suprématie. Mais il faudra désormais compter avec Alice Coote. Quelle diseuse ! Elle n’a pas absolument la voix du cycle, son mezzo est trop opulent, trop sombre, dans la manière de moirer les textes quelque chose d’un autre temps, d’un autre art, survit. Aurait-elle écouté un peu trop Dame Clara Butt ? Je tiendrais là un indice, mais enfin cette façon de parler dans la mélodie, d’employer les mots pour les projeter au-delà des gréements : "I would ride as never a man has ridden" vous emporte ! D’autant que l’Orchestre d’Hallé, conduit avec aplomb et poésie par Mark Elder, semble se rappeler des années Barbirolli. Le disque se poursuit avec une des œuvres les plus bouleversante coulée de la plume d’Elgar. "Polonia" salue les forces polonaises engagées auprès des alliés durant la première guerre mondiale, et si les thèmes de Paderewski et de Chopin y passent, c’est d’abord tout l’orchestre d’Elgar qui y produit un univers sonore terrifiant, entre déflagration et lyrisme. Mark Elder en a tout compris, et donne à cette partition méprisée sa vraie voix : une protestation contre la guerre. Sa baguette se fait légère dans des "Pomp and Circumstances Marches" emmenées à tempo prestes, justement comme les brossait jadis Barbirolli. Au fil du temps une impressionnante série Elgar s’est construite à Hallé, que le label de l’orchestre a fidèlement documentée. J’y reviendrais (Discophilia - Artalinna.com). (Jean-Charles Hoffelé) The latest release in Hallé’s award winning Elgar Edition features the much anticipated studio recording of Sea Pictures, coupled with the lesser known tonepoem Polonia and the five original Pomp and Circumstance Marches. Following their recent chart topping release of Vaughan Williams (Sea Symphony CD HLL 7542) Elder and his acclaimed forces present a volume of Elgar with revelatory performances of both much loved and lesser well known works. Previous Elgar releases of The Dream of Gerontius (CD HLD 7520) and The Kingdom (HLD 7526) were universally acclaimed, each winning a Gramophone Award. Premiered in 1899, shortly after the triumph of the Enigma Variations in London the previous month, Sea Pictures became an immediate hit (with two of the songs being performed with piano accompaniment for Queen Victoria at Balmoral two weeks after the premiere). The cycle of five songs for which Elgar selected a variety of poems from his wide knowledge of literature, features a range of masterly orchestral textures and stunning vocal settings. The featured soloist is world renowned mezzo soprano Alice Coote, regarded as one of the leading artists of our day, equally famed on the great operatic stages as in concert and recital she has been named the 'superlative British Mezzo' (San Francisco Chronicle). Her performances have been described as 'breathtaking in [its] sheer conviction and subtlety of perception' (The Times) and her voice as 'beautiful, to be sure, but, more importantly, it thrills you to the marrow.' (The Daily Telegraph). Polonia has long been overlooked but this recording will re-establish this highly engaging tonepoem which quotes Polish tunes and Chopin, written as a tribute to Poland’s contribution to the Allied cause in the First World War, in a brilliantly orchestrated score. Not all of the five original Pomp and Circumstance Marches are as universally well known as No.1 and No.4 and, although constructed on the same structural pattern, they display an extraordinary variety of character. These orchestral showcases are a perfect vehicle with which to display the technical and artistic skill of the Hallé under Elder.
