One may well ask why we would want to make this film? The quick answer to that question is that this film is a celebration of a double renaissance over recent decades, one of the viola d’amore and one of the music of Christoph Graupner. The viola d’amore along with the viola da gamba family almost disappeared from view in the nineteenth century, partly because the more projecting sound of the modern violin family quickly became popular and some would say better suited to the larger concert hall. Parallel to that, musical tastes changed through the classical and romantic periods and the modern string family with its associated increased technical possibilities better met the demands of composers. (...) The renaissance of Christoph Graupner is a quite different matter. While interest in the music of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann and many other baroque composers was being brought back into fashion from the mid-nineteenth through to the early 20th century, the music of Christoph Graupner remained out of sight.
