Hollywood ? Keith Warner évidemment projette le drame lyrique de Barber du coté d’Hitchcock, et de ses films les plus sombres, ceux où ses héros se dédoublent dans des miroirs, ceux des claustrations dans des manoirs où les âmes sont en perdition. Ce spectacle est d’une beauté folle et la musique itou, dirigée avec une ardeur lyrique par Jakub Hrusa qui a retenu les leçons de Mitropoulos, ôtant le sucre que Barber y aura glissé pour lui préférer le drive, l’urgence, l’inquiétude d’une battue quasi névrotique. Emma Bell est transcendante en Vanessa, elle affronte crânement le souvenir impérissable de Steber, Edgar Monvidas tout autant, irrésistible Anatole, séducteur sombre, Plowright terrible en baronne acariâtre et cruelle, tout cela se regarde comme un film et donne à l’opéra de Barber le statut d’un chef d’œuvre lyrique du XXe Siècle, courrez-y ! Abandoned by her lover Anatol, Vanessa retreats from the world, waiting and hoping with only her mother and her niece Erika for company. But when, 20 years later, Anatol’s handsome young son arrives unexpectedly, he shatters the calm of this shuttered household of women.
