Enrico Onofri, violon

Le projet de ce disque repose sur une anecdote. En visitant un monastère Zen, Enrico Onofri observe des moines qui s'occupent à coudre leur kesa, vêtement qu'ils porteront le reste de leur vie. Il remarque un jeune novice qui lui, détricote le sien. Le maître intervient : « Ces coutures représentent ce que nous étions et qui nous sommes aujourd'hui lorsque nous le portons. Laisse les être ce qu'elles doivent être. Et soit heureux. » Onofri reprend ainsi un enregistremement réalisé en 2009 de pièces pour violon seul du 18ème siècle pour le « retricoter » et le réactualiser à sa manière. Avec cette idée très zen de recréer dans l'instant et de partager aussitôt. Bach tout d'abord avec la transcription inédite (dans la tonalité d'origine s'il vous plait !) de sa toccata et fugue BWV 565. En funambule, Onofri arrive par une virtuosité jamais redondante à maintenir la polyphonie de l'œuvre et ce, malgré la gageure du ré mineur. La Sonate de Tartini Dinone abbandonata réduite pour un seul violon (selon le souhait du compositeur qui trouvait l'ajout de la basse « cérémonieux») est intéressante parce qu'entrecoupée de la poésie de Métastase, elle conserve une narrativité de chaque instant, illustrée par un violon aux aguets et un violoniste aux taquets. De la passacaille de Biber, Onofri en fait ressortir toute la souplesse de la ligne et le brillant de chaque variation. Les Fantaisies en trois mouvements de Telemann sont d'un charme naturel et d'une vivacité contrapuntique irrésistibles. La Gulliver Suite réclame un second violon. Tout à la fois excentrique et très brève elle codifie en musique avec des procédés complètement originaux une théorie inspirée du roman de Swift. Le disque se conclut par une pièce de violon de Giovanni Bassano. Un Ricercata, exécutée comme une libre improvisation. Enrico Onofri possède un jeu (au sens de s'adonner à un jeu, s'ébrouer) à la fois ludique, virtuose et voluptueux, et son violon baroque, un anonyme du 18ème siècle, n'est pas en reste : piqué éclatant et timbre satiné. Comme le recommande finalement le spirituel Onofri et son maître zen : Enjoy. (Jérôme Angouillant)

The works for solo violin recorded on this album do not belong to the normal repertory performed by modern or baroque violinists, with one exception : H.I.F. von Biber’s Passacaglia. One of these works is part of the great baroque organ repertory : J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D (RE) minor BWV565. We do not know if the celebrated version of Toccata and Fugue BWV565 for organ is the original draft or only a transcription. The hypothesis that this work was written for a bowed instrument and then transcribed for organ is based on the presence of unique (or rare) elements found in Bach’s keyboard writings. This is corroborated by the fact that the fugue subject and other various episodes seem to have been thought of for a stringed instrument rather than a keyboard. Whether this hypothesis is true or false, in the last few decades a number of versions for solo violin of Toccata and Fugue BWV565 have been written and recorded. All of them in the key of A minor to facilitate performance, raising it from its original key by a fifth. It’s nowadays taken for granted that the violin version must be in A minor… The uniqueness of the version on this CD comes from maintaining the original key of D minor. The violin writing becomes so exaggerated, virtuosic and at times bizarre with respect to the common versions in A minor, but it’s certainly closer to the magnificent resonance of the original organ version. Also on this cd , some of the famous Fantasias for solo violin by Telemann, some sonatas by Tartini, played without the bass – in a letter Tartini tells us he often performed them in that way – and also the Gulliver suite for two violins by Telemann:Each movement describes a situation from Swift’s story through expedient rhetoric both unusual and comic - as in the Ciaccona written in tidy Lilliputian notation of sixty-fourth notes, the Gigue of the giants from the island of Brobdingnag (written backwards in enormous 24/1 notation)…
