Ce qui s'appelle travailler pour le roi de Prusse. Frédéric II reçut en son palais de Sans-Souci celui qu'il appelait "le vieux Bach", lequel eut à s'en faire, des soucis. Car son auguste admirateur lui soumit à la flûte un air (thema regium) pour improviser à trois voix, davantage si affinités. Mais trois voix ça va, six voix bonjour les dégâts. Aussi le cantor de Leipzig emmena-t-il son devoir à la maison pour en ressortir jusqu'à ce prodige fameux du grand Ricercar (que fasciné orchestra Webern). Cela dit, c'est toute cette "offrande" (de 1747, trois ans avant la mort de Bach, et on aurait été plus inspiré de titrer ça Envoi musical) qui constitue le sommet de l'art contrapuntique occidental, prolongé par l'Art de la Fugue (autre titre apocryphe) et les Variations Goldberg. Reste l'instrumentation possible. Aux entrelacs stimulants de ce défi labyrinthique (dans le concert organisé des gloses qui regardent l'espace et meurent dans le temps, aurait dit notre ami le poète Jean Tortel), entrelacs convenant jusqu'à un instrument soliste (au piano Charles Rosen partiellement, puis Konstantin Lifschitz en première intégrale), les solistes de l'Orchestre baroque de Turin ont préféré un nappage sonore un peu fluctuant et indifférencié, non sans effets de pompe. Cordes d'un côté, orgue souvent soliste de l'autre (on aurait préféré justement un recours à la flûte pour l'introduction du thème, et mieux suivre les 6 voix du ricercar !). Ce parti-pris émollient n'est pas le nôtre, ce sont les Goldberg qui étaient sensées endormir le comte Keyserling. D'où notre conclusion malherbienne pour qui comprendra : plus j'y vois de hasard plus j'y trouve d'amorce, où le danger est grand c'est là que je m'efforce, en un sujet aisé moins de peine apportant je ne brûle pas tant. In 1747 Johann Sebastian Bach went to Potsdam visiting his second son Carl Philipp Emanuel, who was at the court of Frederik the Great. In that occasion the elderly musician was welcomed with all the honors by the king of Prussia, great music lover, who asked him to improvise at the harpsichord a fugue for three voices on a deeply chromatic theme proposed by him. After happily completing this task, the king asked Bach to create a fugue for six voices on the same theme. The achievement however was too difficult to be improvised and for this reason Bach answered the king that he would send him a copy of this work after his return to Lipsia. From this memorable evening arose the Offerta Musicale, one of the huge masterpieces by the genius of Bach, a speculative work that continues nowadays to arouse regard and astonishment in the public. This piece is proposed by Elegia thanks to the Turin Baroque Orchestra soloists’ masterful reading, that already in 2017 has emerged with the splendid CD dedicated to the organ concerts by Vivaldi and that came up to the music of Bach with the same musicality and the same high interpretation.
