Sujet visionnaire, le "1984" d’Orwell aura inspiré à Lorin Maazel un opéra simplement génial. Jonathan Watkins lui apporte aujourd’hui son pendant chorégraphique. Fasciné par l’ouvrage depuis ses quinze ans Watkins aura cédé à la proposition du Northern Ballet de penser un grand spectacle chorégraphique où les écrans de télévisions et l’œil de Big Brother démultiplient le sentiment d’une surveillance continue et omnipotente à laquelle Winston Smith n’échappe qu’en se réfugiant dans son alcôve, métaphore du ventre maternel : alors les écrans se brouillent, aveugles soudain. Le décor technologique aurait pu phagocyter le ballet, le voyeurisme du sujet (et la manière dont il est traité) amoindrir la puissance du geste chorégraphique, mais il n’en est rien, car fidèle à Orwell Jonathan Watkins ne renonce jamais à exprimer la complexité des personnages. Tobias Batley fait passer dans sa danse tous les registres expressifs d’un acteur, comme fait également la Julia ambigüe de Martha Leebolt, les éclairages glaciaux se parent souvent d’effets qui rappellent le cinéma expressionniste allemand, à quoi la musique d’Alex Baranowski apporte une tension incessante : on a le sentiment qu’implacable, un écrou se resserre. L’urgence qui emporte le spectacle rend bien compte de cette création de première force qui ajoute au ballet moderne un opus majeur (Discophilia - Artalinna.com). (Jean-Charles Hoffelé)
